Richard atwell

Mayor of Saanich

Meet Mayor Richard Atwell

It has been an honour to serve our community over the last four years and I’m proud to be a 21-year resident of Saanich.

For those of you who aren’t already familiar, my professional background is in IT. I graduated from UVic with a B.Sc. in Computer Science and previously worked as a software engineer at Apple, Inc. in California before moving back to Saanich where I was raised.

Since being elected in 2014, I have kept four guiding principles at the heart of my approach:

  • Be respectful of residents
  • Strive for innovative solutions
  • Bring about progress in a tax-friendly manner
  • Protect agriculture and the environment, and enhance the natural beauty of Saanich

I have a fundamental belief in empowering the public through an open, citizen-centered approach. Only by involving the community in decision making, can we establish a collective vision for the next thirty years.

How I'll help

Richard’s Focus Areas

Leadership

It has been an honour to serve our community over the last 4 years, and while we have made some gains, the most important work is still ahead of us. That’s why I’m running alongside four Saanich Council candidates who bring unique strengths and new perspectives to the council table. Under my leadership, we will work together as a team to address the issues that matter most to you.

Moving Saanich Forward

As a team, we are committed to a new approach to budgeting that improves affordability in Saanich. We will address long-standing transportation challenges to improve mobility and safety. We will also ensure that truly environmentally sensitive areas are protected. And we will accomplish all of this with the utmost transparency and accountability.

IAN JESSOP
Former Broadcaster (CFAX, CKNW)

As a broadcaster, my goal is to uncover the truth, bring information to light, and be a voice for those people or ideas that aren’t always at the forefront. This isn’t always easy, but I feel that we have to question what we’re told and search for a better way forward.

It’s time for fair representation and honest communication in Saanich. With your support, I’ll ensure that you have a voice at the council table.
